Hello from Portland Maine! The Cross Church School of Ministry has been here in Portland, Maine since Thursday partnering with Aaron Werner who is planting Cross Church Maine in the Greater Portland area. Portland has the population size of about 66,000 people but has the highest percentage of atheists per capita and Maine overall is the least religious state in the nation. The enemy has a foothold in this city and darkness overwhelms it. However, we know, as believers, that the gates of hell will not prevail against the Kingdom of God! The Gospel is and will continue to advance in this city. There is no Southern Baptist influence in the Northeast and many churches are dying in this region. But God has called a family to serve the people of Portland and share the good news of Jesus Christ!
Aaron Werner is originally from Maine. His Dad and brother are lobstermen. Aaron worked as lobsterman many times in his life. Aaron is married to Kathy and they have four young girls. They moved up here following the call of God to plant a Gospel-Centered Church to the Greater Portland area. He is the lead pastor of Cross Church Maine and on the side he works as a lobsterman to get to know others.
Cross Church Maine will launch THIS Sunday on the campus of the University of Southern Maine. They are excited but still have a lot of work to do! Please pray for this family as they live and serve the people of Portland.
The CCSM has been helping them with getting flyers out, talking to people in the city, putting bulletins and communication cards together, sending out invites and then serving alongside them on Sunday. Oh and did I mention that we have done some of this in 20 degree weather and a light snow!
So, how can you pray, here’s are a couple of ways:
1.) Pray for the church. Our Adversary, the devil, would love for this church to fail. He has such a stronghold on this city! Pray that the light of the Gospel shines in the darkness and the enemies stronghold is defeated!
2.) Pray for the Werners. Pray against the attacks of Satan and his demons on this family. May they put on the whole armor of God so that they may stand against the attacks of the devil. Pray for the families that they get to know and may God use them to present the Gospel to them.
The picture pictured above left is the Portland Head Light,the most recognizable Lighthouse in America. We had the chance to go there today after we finished helping the Werner’s with the church! It was cold and somewhat dangerous (ice and snow everywhere) but it was well worth the slight danger!
