Why I Chose the Cross Church School of Ministry

Richard is a resident minister with the Cross Church School of Ministry on its Global Missions track. Richard is with CCSM for one year preparing to do overseas missions work with the International Mission Board.

Why did I choose to come to the Cross Church School of Ministry? All I can say is that it was a God thing. Over the past few years God has really given me a passion for His heart; that is a heart for the nations. It is God’s desire to have a personal relationship with us. By “us,” He means all peoples from all nations (people groups, not just geo-political states). After earning my undergraduate degree, my plan was to apply and serve the International Mission Board overseas as a Journeyman missionary.

This was my plan, not God’s. I began the application process in May of 2012 and found out in July of 2012 that I was no longer eligible to serve as a Journeyman because of an age-requirement change. I was frustrated and didn’t know what God had planned for me at the time. All I wanted to do was go and take the Gospel to those around the world who have never had the opportunity to hear it and what Jesus Christ has done for them.

In January 2013, our pastor at Grand Avenue Baptist Church in Fort Smith, Arkansas, Dr. Jeff Crawford explained that God was calling him to go and serve as the president of the Cross Church School of Ministry (CCSM). I knew immediately that this might be a place God would call me at some point to prepare for ministry in global missions. Dr. Crawford and I spoke a few times throughout the spring and summer, but I just didn’t feel it was the right time for this transition.
Three weeks before the CCSM was to begin, God spoke through Dr. Crawford to show me that the time was right and that He was opening the door for me to come to the CCSM. God was asking me to “step out in faith” and trust Him. God has shown me through many avenues in the last few weeks that this is where I needed to be at this time in my life. All I can say about, why I chose the Cross Church School of Ministry, is that it was a total God thing.
